The Batman is a 2008 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Directed, written, and produced by John Albright, the film is the first installment in a planned series revolving around a shared universe featuring other DC Comics characters. Jon Hamm stars as Batman/Bruce Wayne: a billionaire who sets out to fight the crime of Gotham City by night as a fearful vigilante nicknamed "the Batman". Hamm is joined by co-stars John Cleese, Gabriel Macht, Bryan Cranston, Delroy Lindo, and Brooke Burns.

Following the critical and commercial failure of Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin, the future of the Batman film franchise seemed to be in jeopardy. Joel Schumacher was planning to write a new installment in the franchise entitled Batman Triumphant, but Batman & Robin's scathing reviews and poor standing at the box office led to the project being scrapped altogether. Years passed, and Batman faded away from the motion picture spotlight. Many attempts to revive the franchise were made, but the various scripts and proposals never took off. It was until 2006 when rumors began to circulate that a screenplay for a Batman reboot was greenlighted by Warner Bros. Pictures, and that the search for a director was on. In July of that year, it was officially revealed that a Batman reboot was in the writing/pre-production stages and that several directors were propositioned. Some weeks after this report, director John Albright announced that he will be the film's director. Warner Bros. later confirmed this, saying that Albright was among the list of directors who were given the opportunity.
